Sporting clubs in the electorate of Broadmeadows will receive a share in more than $485,000 in funding as part of the latest round of health promotion foundation VicHealth’s Active Club Grants; an initiative encouraging more Victorians to get physically active.  Building on the momentum generated by VicHealth’s successful This Girl Can – Victoria campaign, the new funding will help local sport clubs across Victoria deliver more opportunities for women and girls to get active.

The grants will also provide more social, flexible and accessible sport programs as well as more opportunities for people from disadvantaged communities to take part in sport.

Frank McGuire, State MP for Broadmeadows, said the local grants will make a significant difference to the clubs in the Broadmeadows electorate and help more local residents get involved in community sport.

“Being part of a local sports club is a fantastic way for locals in the Broadmeadows area to feel connected to their community and embrace a healthy lifestyle,” Mr McGuire said.

“With these Active Club Grants, local sport clubs will be able to deliver a wider range of opportunities for everyone to get active no matter their age, gender or ability.  “Regular physical activity is a vital part of our overall health and wellbeing as it protects against many illnesses and helps us to be mentally healthy by connecting us to others in our community.”

“I welcome this new funding to support our hardworking grassroots sporting clubs that are making it easier for people to be active.”

VicHealth CEO, Jerril Rechter, said the grants will help more residents in the Broadmeadows electorate to make physical activity part of their day-to-day life.

“Our Active Club Grants will mean more opportunities for Broadmeadows electorate locals to get moving in a fun, inclusive and social environment,” Ms Rechter said.  “We continue to see a growth in the number of women and girls playing sport, so it’s fantastic to see local clubs responding to this demand by delivering more opportunities for women and girls and less active Victorians to give sport a go.  We’re proud more Broadmeadows electorate residents will be able to get involved in the sports they’re passionate about while connecting with their local community.”

Local clubs funded in the Broadmeadows electorate include:

Life-Long Learning

Thursday, 8 November 2018

The Victorian Government is investing in lifelong learning, jobs and growth in the electorate of Broadmeadows and the City of Hume.

Free TAFE courses beginning next year are crucial in this community, the Member for Broadmeadows, Mr Frank McGuire said today.

Courses range from Building and Construction, Plumbing, Engineering Pathways and Education Support among others available at KANGAN Institute in Broadmeadows.

“These courses are targeted at the jobs most in demand according to Victorian employers,” Mr McGuire said. He welcomed the Andrews Labor Government’s commitment to build six new world class schools in the Hume region to address population growth. “This is an important announcement in continuing to build Victoria as the Education State,” Mr McGuire said.

A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will make sure every new Victorian primary school comes complete with a kindergarten, making it easier on parents and building for a growing state.

The Andrews Labor Government will invest almost $5 billion over the next decade to deliver a full 15 hours of three-year-old kinder, making sure about a quarter of Victorian families pay nothing at all. We’ll cover 65 per cent of the costs for families on higher incomes.

Kindergarten is the foundation of a great education, teaching kids communication skills, responsibility, and helping them make new friends – so there’s more to do to ensure all Victorian children reap the benefits, and now we’re going further.

Next year marks the 20th anniversary since I began working to establish the internationally acclaimed Global Learning Village model for lifelong learning which has flourished in Hume.

The Global Learning Village Model has been a successful collaboration with the City of Hume for life-long learning from pre-school reading classes to university degrees in centres in Broadmeadows, Craigieburn and soon in Sunbury.

Mr McGuire also congratulated Enable Enterprises for delivering skills and jobs through their social enterprise and Julie McKay for her passionate commitment to inclusion through the dignity of work.

Recycling More E-Waste And Keeping It Out Of Landfill

Wednesday, 24 October 2018

The Andrews Labor Government has awarded 76 councils with $16.5 million to help them manage Victoria’s e-waste and keep it out of landfill.

Member for Broadmeadows, Frank McGuire, today announced Hume City Council would receive $96,290 to fund the upgrade of their e-waste collection and storage sites and help council to safely store and collect the increasing volumes of e-waste.

“We’re giving our local council the support it needs to recycle the growing volumes of e-waste materials”, Mr McGuire said.

The statewide funding will result in 98 per cent of Victorians having reasonable access to drop off facilities, ahead of the Labor Government’s ban on e-waste coming into effect in July next year.

Councils will be equipped to receive discarded electronics, which will be stripped of components for reprocessing into new technology or sold on the second-hand goods market.

To help residents prepare for the ban, the Labor Government is also providing councils with $790,000 to deliver local education campaigns. Applications will open in November for councils to apply for up to $10,000 in funding.

“The more valuable e-waste we can keep out of landfill, the better and this funding will help us do that”, Mr McGuire said.

E-waste can be described as anything with a plug or a battery that is at the end of its useful life. It includes everything from old mobile phones, computers, audio devices, refrigerators and other white goods, hair dryers, TVs, heaters and air-conditioners.

The amount of e-waste generated in Victoria is projected to increase from 109,000 tonnes in 2015 to approximately 256,000 tonnes in 2035.

The upgrades will ensure 98 per cent of Victorians in metropolitan areas will be within a 20-minute drive of an e-waste disposal point, and 98 per cent of Victorians in regional areas will be within a 30-minute drive of an e-waste disposal point.

Community Harmony Program To Boost Social Cohesion In Hume Area

Monday, 22 October 2018

The Andrew Labor Government has announced $4,000 in new funding to strengthen relationships between diverse communities in the Hume area.

Frank McGuire, State Member of Parliament for Broadmeadows, announced that Melbourne Health, based in Johnstone Street, Broadmeadows, will receive $2,000 per year over a two year period for their Connect 4 Wellbeing:  Street-by-Street project.

This funding will assist in improving community mental health through promoting social connection by enabling residents in the new estates and/or housing developments in Craigieburn to meet their neighbours in their street in the fun and informal settings of a street BBQ.  The project is partnering with Neighbourhood Watch who will provide in kind support for BBQ events, and run over 2 summers with up to 30 BBQ events held each year.

“This grant will ensure support for Hume area local initiatives that respond to racism and discrimination experienced in our communities”, Mr McGuire said.

The grant will support Melbourne Health to identify and respond to social cohesion challenges, and increase intercultural and interfaith engagement and understanding.

This is among the 44 projects that will be supported through the 2018-2019 Community Harmony program the Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott announced.

Nearly 200 applications were submitted to this round of the program, from both new and established community groups across regional Victoria and metropolitan areas.

Applications were considered by an independent panel including representatives of the Victorian Multicultural Commission.
