Life-changing opportunities for every Victorian, vital for residents of Broadmeadows, are highlights of today’s “Getting Things Done” state budget delivering new skills, good jobs, more schools and better roads.

MP for Broadmeadows, Mr. Frank McGuire said residents will benefit from multi-million dollar projects and access to landmark initiatives.

$172 million investment in TAFE

“The Andrews Labor Government’s free TAFE courses for priority skills is a life changing initiative,” Mr. McGuire said. “The $172 million investment gives more Broadmeadows residents the chance to train at TAFE and get the right skills for good jobs.” The Government will make 30 priority TAFE courses and 18 pre-apprenticeship courses free. More than 30,000 new TAFE places will be funded throughout Victoria under this initiative.

More local students will also be able to finish school qualified and ready to work, with the introduction of Head Start Apprenticeships and Traineeships in 100 secondary schools.

“It means students in our community will have the option to undertake an additional year of high school, and graduate with an apprenticeship or traineeship, ready to start work in a good job,” Mr. McGuire said. Local students will also get expert advice to help them make career choices, with career education in schools to be overhauled from Year 9.

  • Broadmeadows is also Melbourne Storm’s field of dreams with a $12 million investment from the Andrews Labor Government to build a Rugby League Centre of Excellence featuring new playing fields, high-performance facilities and an administrative base for NRL Victoria. Melbourne Storm is a world champion team and the Centre of Excellence will provide a new hub for rugby league programs for boys and girls, men and women and a venue for training, camps, state and national tournaments. Young Tonumaipea is Storm’s local hero.

  • Families in Broadmeadows should have the local services and infrastructure they need, from new playgrounds to parks and community centres, through an extra $50 million in the Growing Suburbs Fund.

  • Broadmeadows Railway Station is set to share in $10 million to plan for upgrades at suburban stations to deliver safer, more comfortable train travel.

  • Labor’s commitment to the Education State also includes a $3 million investment to upgrade and modernise classrooms at Roxburgh College.

  • A further $1 million will go towards the Northern Regional Trails Strategy to plan and prioritise local cycling and hiking trails, as identified by the Northern Metropolitan Partnership.

Broadmeadows residents will also get more help to make ends meet with a $48 million Power Saving Bonus to help Victorian families get a better deal from power companies. To receive a $50 bonus, local households need to use Victoria’s Energy Compare website between July 1 and December 2018. The independent price comparison website helps the typical household save $330 on their energy bills in the first year alone. Big power companies rely on people not having the time, information or knowledge to get a better deal. Energy Compare removes the complexity and time required to find the best deal.

A $23.9 million investment in this year’s Budget will also go toward improving road safety around our schools and boosting Victoria’s School Crossing Supervisor Program. This funding boost will give local parents confidence that as they send their children off to school, a crossing supervisor will be looking out for them.

“Thousands of jobs are being created as we build Victoria’s roads, rail, hospitals and schools. We want to make sure that locals are first in line for these good, new jobs. This budget delivers results for our community.” Mr McGuire said.
