Jemena has today marked the start of the Broadmeadows Depot Redevelopment Project with a sod-turning ceremony in Melbourne’s north.

The $12.7 million project will ensure more than 320,000 homes and businesses across the Jemena Electricity Network (JEN) will continue to receive reliable electricity now and in the future.

Jemena Managing Director, Paul Adams said the redeveloped depot will be an important operational point across the JEN with maintenance, fieldworkers, and other key operational activities being managed from the site.

“Today marks the next step in shoring up the Jemena Electricity Network for the residents of Melbourne’s north-west, with the new depot being able to scale up over time to match the significant growth we expect to see across Melbourne’s northern corridor over the next 10 to 20 years,” said Jemena Managing Director Paul Adams.

“We know that – despite changes in the way our customers use electricity – they continue to require access to reliable and affordable energy. This redevelopment gives our customers confidence that the Jemena Electricity Network will continue to provide them with these services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, over the coming decades and beyond.”

Mr Adams said the redevelopment will include a range of sustainable design elements as well as technology to support online and virtual working arrangements. The new depot will also be one of the first buildings constructed in-keeping with the Broadmeadows Structure Plan; a joint plan produced by the Victorian Government and Hume City Council which sets out a vision for future developments in the area.

“Our redeveloped depot will incorporate sustainable design elements such as solar panels and rainwater tanks. We’ve also made sure to include the latest smart office features, to support our Broadmeadows team to work collaboratively and efficiently, enabling them to provide better service to our customers,” Mr Adams said.

Mr Adams was joined by the Mayor of the Hume City Council, Councillor Drew Jessop, as well as the State Member for Broadmeadows, Mr Frank McGuire MP at the sod-turning ceremony.

The redeveloped Broadmeadows Electricity Depot is scheduled for completion in late 2017 and will house more than 150 employees.
